Decentralized applications live and die by the reliability of their RPC layer. When a dApp grows from a few hundred users to hundreds of thousands, the number of JSON-RPC calls hitting your node infrastructure grows exponentially. Wallet balance checks, contract reads, event log queries and transaction broadcasts all compete for the same resources, and a single overloaded node can bring the entire user experience to a halt.
The first step in scaling is understanding your traffic profile. Most dApps are read heavy, with eth_call, eth_getBalance and eth_getLogs making up more than ninety percent of total requests. Write operations such as eth_sendRawTransaction are far less frequent but far more sensitive to latency and failure. Separating these two workloads onto dedicated node pools lets you tune each one independently and prevents a spike in reads from delaying critical transactions.
Caching is the next major lever. Responses for finalized blocks never change, so they can be cached aggressively at the edge. Requests that reference the latest block can still benefit from a short cache window of one or two seconds, which absorbs bursts from many users requesting the same data at the same moment. A well designed cache layer routinely reduces load on the underlying nodes by sixty to eighty percent.
Global load balancing completes the picture. By deploying nodes across multiple regions and routing each request to the closest healthy endpoint, you cut round trip latency and gain automatic failover when a region degrades. Health checks should verify not just that a node responds, but that it is fully synced and within a few blocks of the chain head, otherwise users may see stale balances or missing transactions.
Finally, observability ties everything together. Track request rates per method, p50 and p99 latency, cache hit ratio, error codes and block lag for every node. Set alerts on sustained increases rather than single spikes, and review your dashboards weekly to spot trends before they become incidents. With these practices in place, your RPC layer can scale smoothly alongside your user base.
